Should I turn my lights off before switching off the ignition?

I've never had a car before that switches the headlights off when you switch off the ignition - am I being lazy? Am I shortening the life of the headlight bulbs?

I always turn mine off.

I am also under the impression that starting the engine with them on is a bad idea, and unless you turn them off at the end of a journey you will forget they are on when you next start the engine..

I'd turn them off before starting as well, especially in this weather!

I just turn off to side lights, as it doesn't put so much of a strain on when starting in this cold whether.
