My 156 JTD ... sell, keep or part-ex?
My 156 JTD is approaching 10 years old, it's got 122K on the clock and it's getting a bit ragged around the edges. I've been writing a shopping list so I can budget for the repairs & servicing that will be needed over the next 3-6 months, so far the list is approaching £2K and I haven't factored in things like tyres or unexpected failures. As I commute 30K miles a year at present, my wear and tear costs are high.
As mentioned in a previous thread the exhaust manifold is corroded and leaking, the second cambelt is due around now, the brake pipes are original, the front DS suspension is creaking, there's a lot of bearing noise, the top edge of the windscreen is bubbling with rust and the radiator has seen better days!!
On top of that I have other factors to consider as it's a tuned car; e.g. the gearbox may let go at any time, as could the clutch or the turbo for that matter. A worst case scenario could see me spending iro £4.5K over the next 12 months.
Looking at my options:
- Sell It: Even with the mods and a reasonably good SH, I can't expect to get any more than £1200 in it's current state. I paid £3200 for it last September. But I can use the wife's Aygo for a few months while I save for something newer.
- Keep it: I know what to expect, but could end up spending more than I'd lose in depreciation on a newer car that may cost me very little for a years motoring
- Part Ex it: Thinking a low mileage 04/05 Sportwagon, but there don't seem to be many around. Ideally I'd want cruise, CC, leather and 16" wheels. Should I just push the boat out and get a fairly new 159 (if I can afford the fuel )?
