V6 water pump replacement

Following the failure of the water pump on the V6, I'm about to replace it but have one question for those who have done this before:

The manual says that you need to remove the cam pulleys and rear belt covers in order to remove the water pump. Is this necessary? It looks like that by removing the rear cover retaining bolts there might be enough wriggle room to get the top cover bolts off the water pump and remove it without mucking around with the cam pulleys.

You need to remove the cam pulleys anyway,if you are going to do the cambelt change properly
