Ripped carpet in footwells

Wondering if anyone else has this issue and if it has a common cause?

The carpet in both front footwells on the outside edge has torn, so have a 4 - 5 inch split on both sides.
Dont know if its because it has been removed and not fitted correctly hence being too tight and ripping on the corner, or if it is just a common wear point.

Any ideas?

Cheers, Jase

my driver side is like this, lucky its un-noticable due to the car mat, was annoying when i bought the car and looked under the mat and discovered this tear! about 4 inch long slit along the edge of the footwell

I'm thinking of taking my carpets out through the car anyway at the moment i think. I want to see what the condition of the floorpan is from inside and around the sides.

Maybe could find a replacement carpet from a breaking car .

I have this in the rear, not the front - mat covers it nicely though & I never sit in the back, so doesn't bug me

Same here ... 11 years of wear & tear ... I made the mistake of NOT getting additional mats when we got the car.

My passangers side is like this I just cover it with the mat.

Its probably caused by water ingress making the material weaker.
