rev counter sticking

driving in car yesterday and the rev counter needle stuck at about 1500 revs,when it decided to move it was like a sixties formula 1 car,jumping up and down.turned off engine and it was still sat at 1000 rpm.very strange that.seems allright now,but just want to know if anyone else has seen this is a 53 plate jts by the way.thanks in advance
