There are 3 belts in that area on the 2.0 - the auxiliary belt (alternator, PAS pump, A/C), timing belt and balance shaft belt.
To rule out the aux belt, you (or your mechanic) can take it off and see if the noise stops.
The timing belt *should* be ok, provided that the tensioner and idler were changed when the belt was, and no foreign object has got in the cover (check the bottom cover is present/not cracked).
If the timing belt was changed on the cheap, the balance belt might not have been done. That may have snapped, and if so you were lucky it didn't take the timing belt with it.
If you feel up to it, take the aux belt and covers off and see what you can see.
If you have appropriate breakdown cover, or can afford it, I'd be tempted to have it towed. It might end up being the cheaper option
It could be unrelated to the belts as well, but not much point speculating...
