Softer suspension for a 2000 Lusso sportwagon

My Father in law now has my sportwagon. Loves the car but the suspension is too hard for him and could do with being softer. They live in the country with appalling roads so there are some nasty potholes and sharp edges in the road. And he has a bad back.

The car is on original suspension (obviously with some bushes etc replaced). But original shocks & springs (I owned it from new). I am pretty sure some of the bushes need fixing again but I am not sure that will soften things up.

I know this is an unusual request and can't find any other advice or suggestions. So anybody got any ideas?

I suspect the car will currently have the SP2 or 3 shocks and springs as it's a Lusso, so you can fit the original 156 springs in which would soften it up and raise it a little. PM me the chassis number for more info.
