Purchasing a 156

Hi there
I am a newbie here and to Alfa's in general. Having just written off my Passat estate the wife and I are looking for something smaller and sportier so we are looking for a 156 sportswagon.
We have narrowed it down to a 2001 1.6TS 80000km and a 2001 2.0 selespeed 160000km.
So my question is what should I look for (faults etc) and how do I tell if it all works ok?
Which model would be best?

I look forward to your replies.

156 sportswagon smaller than passat? 1.6 might be a bit too small for a sportwagon, but its lower milage. 2.0 would be ok, but high milage. Main thing is cambelt, on 80k km near its second change, cambelt needs doin every 35k miles (45k km). On a high milage you shuld look on suspension, wishbones, arb, generaly any rattle going over uneven road. Mine is 180k km and doing all suspension now bit by bit. Not very expensive, only arb bushes takes few hours to change. And there is cluch too, might need doin after 160k km. Look for full alfa history. Hope it helps and hopefully you join alfas club

Go for a 2.0 but try to find a lower mileage one if possible, 1.6 is underpowered for a sportwagon, make sure the servicing is up to date, check that cambelt has been changed at recommended mileage.
