Sounds like a classic clutch failure, does it also judder as you release the clutch? This would signify that the DMF has gone aswell, tbh though when you get the clutch replaced ALSO have the DMF done, it will double the price, but if you don't the DMF WILL totally fail and the car will be horrible to drive as it will be like a bucking bronco each time you hange gear.
That's the worst case over with, now it may just be the slave cylinder needs bleeding or is leaking, if this is the case then the cost is £70 tops on the JTD, this is because the slave unlike the later twinnies lives on top of the box. This would take 30 minutes to swap and bleed.
Not quite worst case, but if it is then you wont like it is that the 2nd gear synchro mayhave been chewed up, if you do a gearbox oil change and check the mag plug then if there is a build up that resembles a xmas tree then it's worth having the box rebuilt, if left then this swarfs cousins will get into all the bearings and damage them, eventually throwing a bearing and trashing the box leaving you with a nice grinding noise in every gear, till it throws the diff out.
