156 JTD 16V Gearbox Vibration / Judder
New to this forum and new to owning my first Alfa Romeo which is a 4 year old 156 JTD 1.9 16V M-JET Veloce Diesel with a 6 speed manual box, Giugiaro styling and 55K miles on the clock.
Only had it a week but quickly tuning in to its unique driving characteristics.
The question I have is regarding the differing intensities of vibration and judder, (mainly vibration) I can feel being transmitted through the gear stick, (presumably from the gear box or engine) while Iím holding the gear knob and accelerating through the gears. 1st & 2nd gear are the smoothest but 3rd gear in particular and 4th gear to a lesser degree return a notable amount of vibration which increases to a small judder the harder I accelerate. I guess I could only further describe this vibration as that of an engine being laboured in 5th gear doing just 20mph, but through each gear change my revs are within the range of 2000 to 3500 revs.
Ride is firmer than Iím used to and the car has low profile tyres. I also have the habit of easily tuning in to tiny squeaks, rattles and such like, so the question is Ė is this actually a normal driving characteristic of these cars. I would welcome any comments of similar experiences from other 156 JTD drivers or any questions or suggestions which might help determine if I have a problem.
Thanks in advance.
