I’ve an ‘03 156 1.9JTD(8valve)
Lately the car has been making a very jangly rattle (like a bag of spanners or bearings rattling around) on start up. It only happens on idle and goes away if you rev the car. It disappears all together after about thirty seconds and doesn’t return during any other starts (unless left overnight from cold) ie.
1. It only happens on start (from cold)
2. It only happens on idle
3. It makes no difference if the aircon is engaged or not.
4. It makes no difference if the clutch is engaged or not.
5. It appears to be coming from the aux/cambelt end (at the top perhaps)
6. It goes away if idle is slightly increased.
7. It never returns when the car is warm
8. Engine has correct type/amount of oil.
Everything in the cambelt critical path was changed at the 72K Miles service (all belts, waterpump, tensioners). Car is now on 85K – nearly two years later.
My engine wrenching experience is limited to petrol (Nords, Boxers, Holden sixes). I’ve never been inside a derv.
I’ve only ever opened the bonnet on this car, paid others to service and sort it (thanks Smaky – suspension has been wonderful
It doesn’t sound like big ends to me, it’s not a heavy knock.
Nor does it sound like ticking tappets.
In fact if anything it sounds suspiciously like bearings rolling around inside a hub and clattering.
Albeit big bearings and very loudly. This makes me think tensioner.
Although, I don’t understand why this would only happen on cold starts, that to me sounds like its oil pressure related.
Could be the turbo i guess - although i'd imagine that amount of noise would be terminal for a turbo (i still have boost).
Is it possible to pull/inspect and or replace the cambelt and tensioners on the 1.9JTD without camlocks?
To make things a little bit more difficult, this car is now in Australia, and Alfa never brought the 156 1.9JTD here.. so parts and experience are thin on the ground (nil).
Parts are three days easy from the UK though, so no drama.
Any thoughts.. comments, all welcome
thanks in advance
can i add a sound file to this post?
