The last cruise controlled Selespeed I drove (think it was in 2001-2002, had a facelift dash but not outside) used to work the gears in cruise so if you came to a hill it would auto downshift going up the hill and then go back to 5th when the hill was done.
It's a shame there's no cancel button on the Alfa system but if you pull the handbrake enough to set the dash light, press the brake hard enough to get the lights on (but not slow down) or press the clutch pedal (if you have one) enough to activate the clutch switch it'll cut the cruise but you can resume it with a flick of the stalk.
