2.4 tappets - how noisy should they be?

The tappets on my 10v 2.4 have always been a little noisy on part throttle, like a high-pitched ticking. Hasn't really bothered me before, but i suddenly thought 'do my clearances need checking?'

How often should this be done, and is there a loss of performance if they're not done on time?

A ticking noise on the JTD is normally the water pump or belt tensioner. But there are shims in the tappets which can be replaced if your convinced it's them, there are around 2 dozen different thicknesses to choose from, so the car will probably be off the road for a week whlst they are measured, ordered and replaced...along with the cambelt kit and water pump due to the nature of the beast.
