In addition to all the very good points made above...
Last week I realised my air conditioning compressor didn't come on - pressed the snowflake button several times but the light above that button did not come on, also the fast-demist button (and that light did come on), as the immediate problem was that I just couldn't see, all windows misted up so bad that I had to stop. No heat from my heater is the main problem, due to a busted thermostat. I really need the A/C to see out.
A bit later on, all working fine. It was the outside air temperature sensor - sometimes the Infocentre warns of possible ice on the road and the outside air temp is -42 or sometimes -21 degrees C. At that point, the air conditioning won't turn on because the system won't allow it. Once the outside air temperature returns to the correct 8 - 10 degrees C which it does after some random time delay (weather's horrible here at the moment), then the air conditioning comes on. Something to think about - threshold is probably around 3 degrees. I think on earlier cars you press the trip meter reset button to display outside temperature in the speedometer LCD? If it thinks it's too low, then no A/C.
