Is the 156 1.8/2.0 petrol Sportwagon any good as a tow-car??

I know first of all that I should be looking for a 2.4 JTD, and I am, it's just that good JTD's are hard to find and the petrol versions are more plentiful so the choice is easier to get a good car with the right spec.
I won't be using it to tow a caravan or anything like that, just the occasional (few times a year) car trailer or dolly and maybe a smaller garden trailer.
Does the 1.8 or 2.0 have enough torque to pull a car trailer? or is it a 3rd gear overheating session

Any views are welcome, even the GET A JTD ones

various Alfas

I have had 3 2ltr S/Wagons as tow cars from new.two of them selespeeds, tow race cars on trailer,so not light (ooops),this one has now done in excess of 140k,(and for the selespeed non believers still on the same box and actuator),have mapped it and can pull trailer and Alfa or 996 at very respectable speed in 5th
