Alfa GT bent steering rack
I took my GT in for its 48000 mile service this morning and late this afternoon I receieved a call to say that the technician had diagnosed a bent steering rack and declared the car dangerous to drive. Unfortunately it was too late today for me to visit and examine it myself, and I'm away from home for the next couple of days (yes I did intend to take the car).
Anyway, it seems that the damage must have occured due to a pothole or being knocked whilst parked. Either way I have no recollection of any incident of significent impact and there is no other damage other than the usual scuffing on the wheel rims. But of course the issue is that if the damage has occured through some such impact then it's my own fault and not covered by the warranty.
I'm not happy about this and, as I told the dealer, I'm extremely disturbed that my vehicle could have incured such damage in normal use, without any other trace. I have the number for Alfa's Customer Relations Department and I'll call them tomorrow, but is there any precedent or does anyone have any advice on how I should handle this other than simply waving my overworked credit card?
