ABS Failure/VDC Failure - Cured!
For some time now I've been getting the random "ABS failure/VDC failure" fault. It always happened on braking, often when I just touched the brake pedal to cancel the cruise control. With a little bit of experimentation I found that if I pumped the brake pedal 20-30 times with the car stationary the fault would go away for week or so; however, last week it got so bad that I could only get a day or so before the problem came back.
So, faced with a trip to Anglesey over the weekend, I decided more positive action was required. I removed the brake light switch, gave it a liberal dose of contact cleaner, making sure that it ran down inside the switch, operated the plunger a few times & replaced the switch, connecting & reconnecting the plug a few times to ensure that good contact was made at the connectors, then went for a short drive. No "ABS failure/VDC failure" warnings!
300 miles later & still no "ABS failure/VDC failure" warnings. Looks like I've cured it!
Edit: Bugger! A sad case of premature congratulation. My wife's just walked into the house & said: "You may have thought you'd cured it. . . it's done it again!" Ah well, you can't win 'em all.
Looks like I've found the cause, though, if not the cure. Looks like a new switch may be my best bet, unless I can get into the existing one.
Where are we going & why am I in this handcart?
