The last couple I have bought were plastic. Although the bearing in the middle was metal like the one you have.

The pump on my TS failed at around 130K ... leaked. The impeller was still OK so we think the bearing and seals simply gave up. Luckily the leak wasn't too bad and lasted long enough to coincide with the belt change.

As to tight belt angle at the waterpump and metal vs plastic idlers/tensioners. The belt at the crank pulley is vitually looped and at more acute than at the water pump. As to metal tensioners being hard on the belts... well every belt driven camshaft engine I've ever looked at has had metal pulleys at the crank and at the cams. While I'll be chaging belts, etc, at the recommended milage/age I really don't buy explanations on belt life. Collasing or jamming tensioners/idlers yes, but just 'because its an Alfa' and they're special case, no.
