noisy lifters........i think!
After several attempts to cure my “tapping noise” with serviceable parts, ie fresh oil/filter, new plugs, tested injectors, I have sort of come to the conclusion that it’s the hydraulic lifters/tappets/followers what ever we all like to call them! Testing with a long screwdriver I have isolated the noise front/exposed head (it’s a v6) and on the last cylinder opposite the cam belt. The problem is the belts were done last year so its not due for a while still. Is it easy to change the lifters? I have seen some pictures on the net where somebody who had an Audi undid all the brackets holding the cam in and lifted the cam end up and plucked out the lifters with a magnet type screwdriver, is that a possibility? Could it maybe even be that the cam lobes are worn out, the tapping gets more noticeable once the engine is warm, so I really want to get it fixed, plus it really annoying with the windows open!
