156 MAF Sensor help required

Hi guys, I need a little help.
I have an Alfa 156 1.8 TS acting very eratically.
Had it plugged in & as a result changed about 4 sensors including Air Flow meter & Sensor, actuator etc.
When idle revs jump from between 1000 to about 2500 on their own. strong smell of fuel also so it's obviously getting too much. When I unplug MAF sensor it makes absolutely no difference to the engine performance, it still acts in exactly the same manner. Would i be right in assuming that it should have an adverse affect when unplugged. Could it be that I might just have an electrical problem with the MAF plug. any help would be greatly appreciated, it has me driven mad.

Thanks Colm.

If there's a strong smell of fuel, I'd be checking for leaks. Possibly the rubber runners that go into the intake manifold, or the inlet manifold gasket.

Check the injectors as well, I've seen them leak before...

Engine warning light illuminated even when the MAF is plugged in? Checked the throttlebody hose for splits? Maybe swap MAFs with someone on here with the same car, so you know you are trying a known good one.

When I had a strong smell of fuel on my v6 it turned out to be a leak where the fuel rail pushed into the injector, it also ran very very poorly so I would see if you can find a leak.
