winter tyres + brakes
my gt 1.9 jtd, which i got at 120K kms a few months ago had Hankook's 215/45 ZR17 tyres on them, whose tread depth is hitting the min depth markers... It will possibly go for some more time, as I don't actually do performance driving (but might be doing some bad driving ;-) ) now winter approaches, and i live in zurich. so, i need to get a set of winter tyres anyway... the rims are the original alfa's, which have little scratches from some parking. so, i am guessing it makes more sense to keep the rims and buy the same size winter rims, rather than investing on new rims for winter. i read that you cannot fit chains to even 16", but i won't possibly drive the car on a chain-requiring day... do you think the size is alright for the winter tyres, or should i go for smaller tyres and new set of rims?
i was checking reifendirekt.ch, and see a few 215/45 R17 tyres like
- Federel WS595 (about 100 CHF for 1 tyre),
- Kumho KW23 , Hankook Icebear W300, Nokian WR G2 (these are about 150 CHF for each tyre).
- The rest are more known brands, like Pirelli, yokohama, goodyear, which cost around 200 CHF for piece...
( 100 CHF ~ 66 EUR ~ 59 GBP)
Do you recommend the middle class 150 CHF range? Is Nokian any good?
Also, my brakes are towards the end of their lives, so they need changing, too. I was thinking to get a set of front+back disc+pads and ask the garage to replace and balance all with the tyre change... It will possibly cost me less to buy the brake set from ebay. The garage quoted be about 1200 CHF to change all, of which 250 is labor. I am guessing I can get some nice brakes for cheaper online? I've seen some brands in the forums like EBC GreenStuff, etc. Would you recommend those for normal use?
