New 147 a few minor problems. Advice required please.

Hi, I have purchased a 2002 147 2.0 twinspark. I am new to Alfa's and would like some advice on a couple of issues. I have tried the search facility, but have not found anything specific

1. The gear lever does not self centre when in neutral and when changing from 1st to 2nd all is fine but it causes issues when changing from 2nd to 3rd. It is awkward and the lever needs to be physically pulled across towards 3rd. it's not a smooth change. Is this normal or is there something I could do to address this.

2. When the car was purchased the front cats where rattling. Is the job of replacing these difficult. I'm not adverse to a bit of home mechanics.

Thanks in anticipation.

My 1.9 JTD 147 is just the same re the gear linkage. Today I had it in at an Alfa dealer for service and he said it's because the linkage and/or cable at the gearbox end is corroded or needs cleaning. He could fix it for between 90 and 180 depending on the time it took. I told him I'd have a look at that myself and buy several pints with the money I don't spend on him...

90/180 for cleaning up a gear linkage is a bit steep !! Your problem is very common and cleaning up the linkage in most cases will sort it shouldn't take much more than 30mins to sort for someone who knows what they are doing, your rattle from the front could be a loose heat shield (mine was) or a broken exhaust bracket near the manifold again quite common

Bought my 147 a few months ago having had a mk4 Golf for several years. The gearchange is very different! If you have been used to a car with a short throw, it takes some time to get used to the 147. I also found the change from 2nd to 3rd very awkward at first - it appeared not to want to go into 3rd and I found myself hunting for 3rd gear - sometimes very embarassing! However i have found that by gently gliding the gear change around, it now slips into all gears fine. It could just be that you are used to a very different box. Maybe there is an issue with it, but if my experience is anything to go by, I would persevere with it and try "gliding" the gearstick rather than forcing it about.
