156 2.0 TS Thirsty on Oil
I have a 156 2.0 TS 2002 52 reg. I knew the previous owner (who had owned the car for only 10 months) who I bought the car from who informed me that whilst in his ownership the car was very heavy on oil consumption (approx 1 litre for every 300 miles). Before he sold me the car he had it serviced and the garage informed him that it was a common problem and the solution was to put thicker oil in. So once the filter was changed, he changed it from 5/30 to 10/40 and I have continued using the thicker oil. Even so, I am still getting through approx 1 litre for every 600 - 800 miles, is this right?
Lastly, can someone please confirm the time to check your oil - I was always under the impression you checked oil once a car had stood level for a while and the engine had cooled but the previous owner told me that you had to check Alfas when the engine was hot (so straight after a drive). I would like this confirmed because if checking while hot is wrong then obviously my oil reading will be wrong and I could be putting too much oil in her. Grateful for any answers or opinions on this. Many thanks
