My JTS (Late 2002) has always had an oil addiction. It has generally used about 1L per 500 miles driving it hard occasionally, but mostly 80mph motorway stuff. Interestingly, using 10w60 or 10w40 appears to make no difference. I bought the car with 46K on it and now we are at 124k. Recently I changed the oil (or did I merely throw away some recent oil?) for Castrol Edge Sport 10w60. Consumption is now down to about 200 miles per litre and I try to keep at about 55mph when cruising to conserve oil more than petrol!
There is no puff of smoke on start up but I can see smoke in the mirror when pushing hard on the gas, from this I would guess it's worn rings. Considering the age and value of a 156 with such mileage, it's not worth sending it to a garage for major engine work. If someone on here can advise on how to deal with blocked breathers, I may have a go at that. If the breathers are ok, how much would be involved in replacing the rings myself. Can it be done without removing the engine? I have done bits and bobs on the car- brakes, drop links, radiator so am not too frightened of a 'major' .
Or does the car go to the auction?
