It's hard to say as that recording has been made right up in the engine bay, but that car could well sound just as this one did from the cabin.
It sounded very much like a straight cut gearbox whine. Got louder as rev increased, not as loud as that but still very intrusive. I've listened to a few other related Youtube clips and they certainly "don't all do that sir", don't you just love car dealers.
Made no difference if the clutch was engaged/disengaged, or box in neutral i.e. just rolling along at 40odd mph with gbox in neutral and revving the engine made the same sound. This would indicate it is not the clutch bearing or anything gearbox related, I think.
I'm really rather deflated as other than these few things the car was perfect for my needs (practical and good mpg) and I loved it, never sat in or driven an Alfa before.
Trouble is I need a car in the next couple of weeks at the latest and after driving that a TDCI Mondeo just won't cut it!
Plan is to wait a week or so and see if anything comes up, if todays car is still advertised I may try and get it with a substantial discount, if he'll budge. I doubt he will though.

To make the car right it needs the following (in my opinion)
- New clutch
- Air con re-gass (and hope that fixes it)
- This whining noise sorting out
Now I've worked this out with very little knowledge of Alfa oily bits and used Alfaworkshop.co.uk for part prices....
Clutch kit £160
Aux belt £17
aux tensioner £113
Aux adj idler £47
cam belt kit £95 (might as well while you're in there)
Water pump £37.60 (might as well while you're in there)
Air con gas £45
I have a really brilliant mechanic I use and I would roughly guess e could sort all that in a day and he charges me £29/hr ex vat so that would be approx £260 for 8hrs work.
So, if I can get another £775ish off the price we agreed (£3450) I'll buy it!!
Aint gona happen
