Alfa 147 JTDM fuel consumption

I previously owned a 110JTD engined 147 and normally got between 55-60mpg. Based on this level of excellence, I decided to change for a new 16v version.

I live in France and so most of my day to day driving takes place on 90kph roads on reasonably long journeys and so I was very disappointed that the new car can only manage 41mpg. I have been to local Alfa garage and they say everything is OK.

The car has only done 4000km; will it get better over time? The car is the same weight and I am driving it in a similar manner and so rarely using the engine's additional potential.

Your experience would be most welcome.

Mine does around 45-50mpg with almost 145kkm on the clock...

But I drive a lot on motorways, which is killing the consumption. I guess you could do 55mpg if you would drive mostly on B roads and long jurneys...

But you will have to wait a few miles more for engine to run in properly...

average around 47mpg but, if I travel above 90mph ( obviously on a track ) then the mpg drops fairly seriously.

If you now have the DPF (particulate filter) and did not previously, then this will account for some difference. I would have thought you should get close to 50 mpg when it has settled. I alway got 50 mpg out of the GT JTD.

Thanks to all for the info,

Here is an interesting link that I found confirming keithglos' theory Ingenia Articles
It would seem that the car needs an occaisional good blast and may not be helped by the addition of the 6th gear

Have been doing some long runs recently, generally holding my speed at about 80 - 85mph and have been getting 48-50mpg (nearly 700miles from a tank) (6th at about 2200rpm) 81000 miles on the clock; the car has grown up on motorways under it's last owner.

Cruising at 55 - 60 on single carriageway will do about the same and in line with rdjohn's last comment keep it out of 6th, would have thought 41 mpg was a little low
