3.2 GT - Annoying noise front nearside
When I make a right turn I can hear a scraping metallic noise that seems to originate from the front nearside wheel area. The qucker the car is going into the turn the louder the noise, which may indicate that it is a function of body roll or side thrust on the wheel. With the nearside window open taking a roundabout with gusto produces a very worrying level of sound.
The rhythm of the noise definitely sounds as though something is touching a rotating part of the car. However, I have on several occasions removed the wheels (on both sides) and can see no evidence of anything rubbing, either on the wheels or the shafts and brake calipers. I did see a thread here a while back that attributed a similar sound to the brake backing plates but careful inspection of these does not shown any contact areas, nor do they seem to be loose.
The front pads will need replacing soon but it would be nice to know what the problem is before I tackle them. When I leave the office car park in the evening through the right hand exit my work mates nod sagely as if to say "Alfa Romeo, what do you expect". The only cure that has worked so far is turn up the volume on the radio!
