I have a 147 JTD 16v Mjet. 05 plate 6 speed (facelift model) and was looking for some advice on gearboxes.
I have owned the car since it was 6 months old and brought it from an Alfa dealer. I have had it serviced at the correct intervals but the last few have been done by a reputable local garage.
Recently I have had a problem with the gearbox not staying 3rd gear. It will select it but as soon as I let go of the gearstick it jumps out. All the other gears are fine. I took it to the local garage who were honest and said they hadn't had much experience with Alfas and I would be better taking it to a dealer. I would rather them say that than attempt a bodge job!
I took it to the nearest dealer (not easy being based in the midlands) who quoted me £1800 for a reconditioned gearbox as they said that my particular one could not be stripped.
This leads me to several questions.
1. If they can't strip the gearbox, how can they supply a reconditioned one?
2. Is £1800 too much to pay for a reconditioned gearbox? (I know dealers labour is expensive but is this figure what I should expect)
3. Is it reasonable to expect the gearbox to need replacing after 4 years and 58k miles? - I have been in touch with Alfa customer services who after looking into my complaint said that they weren't able to help.
To further add to my woes last weekend the timing belt failed and now I have another bill for £1500 to rebuild the engine! The belt is not recommended to be changed until the next service. This work is being done by the local garage that I normally use as they are reliable and were the closest to where I broke down.
I have loved owning my Alfa but I was not expecting to have these kind of issues in a car only 4 years old. Am I unlucky or is this type of thing typical?
Sorry for the long post but I needed to unleash my anguish!
Advice and sympathy gratefully received!
