Motor Control System Failure - My Fix.
Good day gents/ladies...
Last week, my 147 1.6TS started misfiring quite a bit and the much talked about MCSF error message started flashing. The car was still driveable but i could tell i was working on only 3 cylinders. Fuel consumption went way up to about 25mpg, the fuel pump light came on and stayed on and would start to flash and beep when i tried to put my foot down.
I came on this forum and had a quick look around to get some idea of what the fault was but no one seemed to know for sure. I got mine fixed yesterday and i'm putting this post up to share my experience just in case you are having similar issues.
I took the car to Simplyalfas and the diagnosis revealed that cylinder one was misfiring. When the coil pack came off, there was some oil in the area where the coils are inserted to meet the spark plugs and this was the reason for the misfire. The guys at Simplyalfa were pretty sure that this oil could easily be the little drips that hang around the lid of the engine oil cap during refill and these somehow manage to drip all the way into the rockercover/assembly.
In addition, we found that the rocker cover around cylinder 4 had completely melted away This explained the high oil consumption over the past few weeks and also provided a means for the oil to get into the wrong places. I took some pictures and i'll put them up when i get home tonight.
So in the end, i got the coil pack and rocker cover changed and it cost me about £150 all in. The guys at simplyalfa were good, the whole process took about half an hour.
All that is left is the fight to get my money back from the warranty company.......
