First service (ouch) buyers beware

I bought my 156 last October. I needed a cheap estate car and fancied a 156SW. I found a nice looking 156SW (02) on here so "enthusiast" owned Full service history although the last two services were not Alfa ones Aircon working, no faults, 6 months to run on the Cambelt. Cars were not selling so I negociated and eventually settled on 2300. Ran it all winter, no big issues other than inner edge tyre wear. MOT was the first frightener, what would they find. Nothing , passed with no problems. Aircon proved fubar although I got it going with a refill and DIY. Then yesterday it was first service time, Cambelts so never going to be cheap. Following advice on here I booked it into Mobitech Canterbury, dropped it off Monday evening to collect Tuesday night. Midday Tuesday came the call Seems those two services had just been oil and filter, so much for the previous enthusiast Spark plugs , probably never changed, number 1 plug all burnt, Cambelt covers damaged , two retaining bolts snapped, manifold support broken, exhaust heat shield not attached, bolts of course broken, rear discs at minimum, osr hub bush worn, hand brake cable poor, front anti roll bar bush worn, both lower wishbone bushes worn
Fortunately they managed to get all the belts, variator, cam covers, plugs, done by 6:30pm for me to collect, 930 inc VAT next time will be all the suspension bits

Buyers beware, if I was a competant mechanic and had really gone to town on the engine I could have spotted the signs and would probably have had to walk away. Let's just hope it does not develop any expensive faults now it is back to full health. Certainly noticed the difference driving home

what rotten luck. Thats the difference between specialist history and run of the mill history i guess. Rest assured mobitech will do a top job, i have used them for years. The bright side is, you will have a car you will be able to enjoy for years to come :-)

Spot on Mitch every mechanic can work on a car but trained specialists know the hidden sides of their specialities and this is where cost savings can be made as they have different suppliers which can really help with costs....

At least you have taken it to the right place, Ian & mick have done both my cambelt changes and last time around they fitted my csc backbox all spark plugs and heat shield,Ian even strentghened the bracket for me and sorted out my clutch pedal problem,Absolutetly top blokes there and nothing is any trouble to them.
