Alfa GT vibration behind dash at 1500-2000rpm

My GT 2.0 JTS has developed a strange vibration that occurs between 1500 and 2000 rpm when standing still. It sounds as if something was loose behind the dash. There is also a shudder from the same area when turning off the engine. When the motor is warm the vibration and shudder disappears. It is not fan speed dependent.

First thought was one of the heat exchangers in the climate control system (since they will be affected by heat) but I have dismantled parts of the unit and it doesn't seem to be the source of the problem. I have also checked for loose parts and wires behind all areas of the dash but found nothing.

Could the problem be the engine itself even though the sound seems to be coming from behind the dash? Any thoughts?
