Depends how long you want to keep the car. I've tried the cheapies off Ebay and they seem to last about a year before they're squeaking (in the case of the top ones) or knocking again. I went for genuine last time I did it because I want to keep the car for a while and don't especially want to do the job again.

Have cheapies on my 156 for 10000 miles or so. Bottom perfect still. One of the tops completely gone had to replace it. Genuine alfa are very expensive.

'cheapies' on mine, the uppers have a slight squeak in very dry weather after nearly 18 months - just a tiny 'niggle' really - no issues with lowers

mine cost £100 each new so im guessing it is worth going cheaper at £60 the pair.
and removing the suspension when fitting makes life a lot easier, i didnt do this and it was a pain in the backside, was mainly because i couldn't get the bottom bolt off to remove the strut.
