Engine noise

hello all

I'm driving a 156 sportwagon 2001, and have got a tapping sound above 2000rpm, this tapping sound is not present when the car is first started, I have read a lot on this site about the variator being noisey but this also seems to go hand in hand with sounding like a diesel on start up which mine does'nt...... Variator or not...?

I'd say not... I'd have the big end bearings checked if I were you. If one of them's getting a bit thin it will quickly wreck the crank if it's not attended to.

Depends what kind of a tapping it is though... How many miles are on the clock?

Wouldnt be so quick to say big ends. They are quite obvious under load and are not really a "tapping" as far as I know.

check the exhaust manifold brackets are not cracked.Mine would give a noise above 4k revs so have just had them replaced and now much better.
