Starting battery from a GT

Ive been trying unsuccesfully to start my brother's car from my GT. It may be because his battery is completely dead (car hasnt been used in a few months ) but I was wondering if it might be anything to do with the terminals on the GT? Im having trouble connecting the jump leads directly to the terminals as they're surrounded by fittings. Is fixing the leads directly to the fittings sufficient, or do I need to get access to the terminal directly? Fortunately, Ive never had to jump start the GT yet so its my first time playing around with the terminals.
