Actually, to be honest, just because the variator rattles like a diesel on start-up does not mean that it needs to be changed. You cannot only replace the variator...the cambelt must come off so this is the usual time to replace the variator. As the variator change costs about £100, it is an oft avoided change just to save money.
My variator rattles at present, but I shall wait another 15k miles before I get it done along with the cambelt. By then the variator will have been in for 52k miles as the 'cambelt kit' (done at 60k) does not include a variator. I am not noticing any adverse fuel consumption, and never have, due to a rattley variator.
As you are unsure of the vintage of you cambelt...best get them all done sooner than later.
