156 V6 clutch

I have just spent several days fitting a new clutch to my V6. this is the first time i have fitted a pull type clutch. I have assembled the bearing on the input shaft with the fork going through the holes in the bearing as normal and re-fitted everything back together.
On depressing the clutch pedal there was a lot of resistance which gave way to allow the piston of the slave cylinder to come out of its body. I can only assume the release bearing has come away from the pressure plate or didn't engage properly.
Has this happened to any body before? or does anybody know if this can be remedied without having to strip everything back down again?
