Whining from gearbox area?

Out today in my 156 and speeds over 65mph the car develops a whine from i think the gearbox area when i drop back to 60 it goes away or i can't hear it.

Is this impending doom or the gear oil needing changing or similar?

Checking the gearbox oil level and/or changing it would be my first port of call.

The level/filler plug is at the front, close to the reverse light switch IIRC and is easy to get at. The drain plug is at the bottom right, and is quite close to the casting. The plug set that Halfords do fits fine though.

Laser Drain Plug Key Set from Halfords Price £10.49

You can get a 19mm spanner round the middle of the plug for shifting it

You could also remove the end cover and clear away any swarf that may be lurking, as per the sticky 4th gear fix on the Alfa Workshop site.
