A bit of history first: Last year I had a problem - the car felt very sluggish and the MCF light came up. Also the engine juddered a little when turning off. I took it to a specialist who diagnosed faulty egr valve. This was changed and the car was much better but the garage still mentioned that it didn't pull as a 20v jtd should. They checked the MAF and found that this was running fine. They diagnosed a faulty MAP sensor - changed this and the car felt brilliant. Was happy even though it had cost £300! This was a local specialist. Car had done 95k.
The car over the last year seemed to get sluggish again about 14 mths, mileage 106k - not as bad as before, but there was a light hesitation at 1800 rpm. Could hear the turbo spool up ok. Whist getting it serviced - took it to Lewis (Alfa Technico) and asked him to have a look whilst it was in for a service. He mentioned that it looked like the MAF. Took the car home and the mcf light came on, and no power. Car revved up very slowly but did rev al they way through the rev range - just felt like the turbo was not working. Also when I turned the engine off, felt the judder (like last year). Called Lewis and he diagnosed a faulty MAF, and ordered this. He also noticed the air filter pipe was loose (slightly damaged) and would not seal. Ordered both this and the MAF and these were changed. The MCF light did not come on after the error code was reset. (Turbo pressure (can't remember the code).
The car revved better, but only after 3000 rpm. Now remember the EGR and MAP sensor were changed last year, and it was strange that these would be faulty. Lewis also mentioned this. On the way home - driving through road works for (50 mph) on the motorway. I tried to put my foot down and after the car hit about 3000 rpm the mcf engine light came on, and the car would not rev beyond 3200 rpm.
Called Lewis and he thought it sounded like the EGR valve. He asked for the car to be bought back this week. We had discussed earlier, and he thought it may be worth cleaning out the egr and map sensor - and I said I would do that this weekend. After taking of the egr valve, found only slightly soot - quite clean, and it looked like it was functioning (by hand). Cleaned up and greased. The solonoid plunger felt ok, so I did not open this. Took off the MAP sensor and this was quite bad. - Cleaned this up and put back on.
Started the car - mcf light still on - took for a test drive and seemed to rev and go slightly better, but a bit smoky at higher revs, and again not as quick as normal. After a few full throttle loads (in 2nd and 3rd), the car stopped revving over 3200 rpm again - so the same issue.
Can't believe the egr valve would be faulty again. Or the MAP sensor. Although the characteristic judder is present when turning the engine off. Only difference now is it won't rev beyond 3200 rpm, after I boot it in 2nd & 3rd a few times. This only started to happen after the MAF was changed.
