156 - Fudged Cat Affects Fuel Consumption?

as title, would a knackered cat converter affect fuel consumption?

mines gone through the roof recently, and i am sure the cat is knackered, as it rattles from inside.

Well if your car is running quicker than it normally does, I'm guessing a faulty cat could be a possibility...

..however I've heard that lambda sensors can affect it. Mine are classed as working and don't upset the ECU or diagnostic tests, however I do wonder if replacing them would improve economy.
