Advice on fuel consumption

Hi all,

Need some help here with fuel consumption as I looked on other threads and couldn't find the right answers.

I am looking to buy an old car for my 70 miles commuting (mainly motorway). Started to look at very old diesel's (golf's mk3, 306's and so on) as I used to drive a focus tdi and it averaged about 50 mpg.

But after looking at some petrol versions of 146 and 156's, I thought that they could be an option too - as I really really want an alfa again.

I know that they won't be as economical, of course, but it might be worth it. Problem is, I need your advice or realistic figures for average mpg on the 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 TS engines for both cars as this will be important to make a decision.
