Is this engine gone?!

I have a 2002 147 TS 1.6 Petrol and i always notice that the oil and coolant were going low quicker than it should. I took it to a garage and they checked the cylinders and they all were at 9 bar. They said i need a whole new engine because the piston rings are gone! What should i do? help me out please!! thanks

I would take it to an Alfa specialist and get them to look at it. If it is the piston rings, then they can be replaced without replacing the whole engine.

It sounds to me like it is something else, maybe a failing headgasket.

Failed piston rings won't cause coolant loss, so it is something else (or something else in addition to the piston rings!!!).

That is normally caused by failing valve stem oil seals. However that won't account for coolant loss or loss of compression.

It's NOT piston rings, 9 Bar of compression is acceptable, but to loose water and oil, in my experience is 1 of 2 things,

Failed head gasket/warped head,

OR,

Water cooled oil cooler,

The first being leaks through to the cylinder, but on ALL 4? I doubt it.

The second meaning the oil and coolant would mix and it's possibly burning off the mix through another gasket, the inlet manifold gasket for example.
