Sorry to sound a bit mean spirited - but if money is non-existent, then there is no way forward other than to be without a car. Is that an option?
If you scrap the 156, you'll have 150 quid and no car. You'd be pretty hard pressed to find a car that is reliable, warranted, a good looker, and no other issues for 1500 quid.
If you spend 1500 quid on your car for a recon warranted replacement engine from a recognized specialist then that is exactly what you will have for that money.
So the decision for you really is - Can I live without a car Yes/No.... If "Yes" then scrap the 156. If "No" then the next cheapest option is 1500 quid on a recon engine from a specialist.
You can also find another mechanic who'll maybe charge a bit less to rebuild your engine, but you won't have a warranty at the end of that.
Can your step-dad/boyfriend/great aunt not lend you 1500 quid to get mobile again?
