It's impossible to be sure via the internet but knocking is never going to be a good thing, especially on an ALFA (note spelling!) as owners who know no better let them run low on oil and the big ends fail (which makes for some terminal knocking).
Of course you have no idea where the knocking was coming form and it could have been suspension or anything.
It's a risk mate. Get the car on a ramp, start the engine and get the mechanics to listen to the bottom end properly. Also check the oil and make sure it is at a decent level. If it on the bottom limit or below then there is a good chance that it hasn't been looked after.
When it comes down to it all you can do is protect yourself so why not get an AA inspection and a warranty.
