You don't need to remove the shaft but it does make it a lot easier, though youll spill gearbox oil if you do pop it out.
Remove the hub nut (36mm),
Remove lower hub to wishbone nut (22mm),
Disconnect track rod end (17mm),
Remove the shock fork to lower arm bolt (19mm),
Knock out the lower hub and track rod end ball joints (Large hammer or balljoint splitter),
Pull the hub clear of the CV joint,
Pull sharply on the driveshaft and it will pop out of the gearbox (beware of the oil that will flow from the driveshaft hole),
Ensure the spring clip is sill on the inner CV joint.
Remove the 2 band clams securing the offending boot and pull the boot clear of the joint (or cut it off now),
Clean out the grease to expose the circlip around the driveshaft inside the CV spider and remove the circlip, the CV joint will just pull off now.
