156 climate control temperature controls

have gone doolally...the main (drivers side) rotary control has developed a mind of its own-sometimes working as advertised i.e increasing/decreasing temp setting in half degree increments, sometimes not, when setting jumps up or down with no regard for input...and also is now 'self adjusting', increasing or decreasing temp setting randomly, and then behaving itself at other times...
can anyone advise how to remove the panel they're mounted on (it's the facelift version), and what actually controls the setting?
I wondered if it's because the rotary control has become worn, and if I could just swap it with the passenger side one which gets a lot less use....

Happiness is....an Italian car...a boat...a sunny day...and a gorgeous Brazilian girl...
