Re: HELP stuck in Neutral
you problem is most likely to be either the relay, cheap and easy or the pump, less so and less so.
the sele pump relay is between the battery and thermostat and tucked under the large rubber hose of the air intake. waggle this with the door open and see if the pump starts whirring, failing that put a different relay in, the one for the radiator fan (in the belay box in front of the battery) is the same type, just swap them. If that fails its more likey to be the pump.
To check this out, down by the front passenger head light there is a black connector that leads to the pump (you may have to take off the felt cover to see properly). Make sure you get the end that goes to the pump and run a couple of wires from the battery, put one wire into each side of the connector (do NOT allow them to touch), if the thing fails to whirr, the pump has gone.
As SEARS says, a blow may shock the motor back into life as failure is often caused by a build up of carbon brush crud that shorts out internally, but you may just be delaying the inevitable. New brushes have to be adapted from an Audi wiper motor for the truly competant.
I got a new pump from AlfaShop in Norwich, posted out for £230 next day a couple of months ago. Job is straight forward, any garage should be able to do it without special tools within a couple of hours as a guide.
