Turns out it's an engine mount that's collapsing.
12,000 miles - not bad for a structural part!
Part is not in stock (quelle surprise), but can be fitted while I wait next week.
Thanks for all the help. Not easy describing noises on t'internet!!
Oh - and to the "individual" who sent a p.m. suggesting it might be my lambda probe...

Thank you SO much! I have been witnessing sort of the same problem since last week. Had the car in on Thursday and my dealer thought it was the roll-bar which was a little bit loose. After tightening the roll-bar, the bonking sound and (now also some vibrations in my engine and throttle pedal) still remained.
After I mentioned the vibrations in the engine and throttle pedal and upon starting the engine, a loud bonk came from the engine bay, the dealer instantly mentioned the engine mount. They had changed two mounts with two different cars earlier and now he suspects this to be the problem.
Have her scheduled in on Monday and I hope they can solve it now wink
Still the only "serious" problem with my Bella in 106500 km's of pure driving joy! I love my Bella wink
