Re: Alfa Romeo 156 Selespeed - can't get into gear
What you need to do is some simple checks, the flat battery is a worry here.
Check that the battery terminals are connected solidly, if they are loose then you'll get loads of wierd warnings and the battery wont charge properly.
Next turn on the ignition, look at the rev counter and just flick on the lights, do you have a yellow light bulb symbol? Does it remain on when you turn the lights off? Remove the key and look closely at the rear lights, are the red ones dimly lit? In that case the problem is the rev counter and it needs replacing, also because the battery has been flattened I would recommend replacing the battery too.
The Sele oil level is the next culprit, if it's low then you can't produce the system pressure required and it just wont work. If it's low though we need to find out why. Are there any puddles of oil on top of the gearbox? If not then it's a backplate replacement that is needed. That can be a costly job (£1500 at the dealer as all they'll say is "It needs an actuator"), there is nothing there I can sort for you at minimal cost and if you like I can do the diag for it too.
