Hand-brake freezing on...

Morning all,
I've had a few problems this winter with the handbrake freezing overnight. I know it can be related to lack of greasing in the cables allowing moisture to penetrate, so I asked the dealership guys whether they'd done the cables during the previous service. The reply amounted to "No, you'd have to replace them, which is expensive - just park it in gear with the hand-brake off...".
Call me timid, but there are times when I'm just not happy about leaving the car on a slope overnight without the brake applied, even if it is in gear.
First time it happened (in a hotel car park) I had to drive off slowly in 1st and let the heat from the sticking pad(s) free things up. Not a good feeling!
Anyone else had/solved this kind of issue?
