Blanking it off will only mask the problem, if it is that. You just put a bit of steel(something like a baked bean tin lid) in at a couple of the gaskets(one by the turbo, one by the EGR valve at the back of the engine). It just really stops the gases be recirculated from the exhaust back into the engine.
I've got a good working EGR valve if you want it, I guess the 10v and 20v are the same. If you pay the postage I'll send it to you if you like. I was only going to give it back to Alfa anyway. It might help you out and point you in the right direction as to what the problem is or maybe even correct it.
